Learning Goals

  • To consider “localism” as not only a geographical scale, but also a political zone, a market, a cultural field, an aesthetic character, and an ethical arena
  • To recognize the roles and values of media created, distributed, preserved, and consumed within the local realm, speaking to local concerns, and made accessible to local publics
  • To think capaciously about the myriad forms of media that allow us to understand, steward, and shape our communities and local environments  — and how those various media forms inform our understanding of what constitutes “the local”
  • To situate local media within regional, national, and global scales of communication
  • To imagine opportunities for each of us — through our various future professions and in our roles as community members and citizens — to support and contribute to our local media ecologies
